Toby Gardner

Researcher

Toby is researcher at Trase, where he supports the research and engagement agendas for delivering real-world impact with partners across civil society, policymakers, finance and the private sector. He co-founded Trase in 2014 and has helped shape its development into a leading open-data platform for transparency in global agricultural commodity supply chains. From 2015 to 2019, Toby co-led SEI’s global Initiative on Producer to Consumer Sustainability, building on more than fifteen years’ experience working on sustainable land use in tropical landscapes, particularly in the Brazilian Amazon. Before joining SEI, he was a research fellow at the University of Cambridge, where he helped found and coordinate the Sustainable Amazon Network, a multi-institutional research collaboration on sustainable land use in Pará, Brazil. Toby holds degrees from the University of Edinburgh (BSc, 2001) and the University of East Anglia (MSc, 2001; PhD, 2007).
