The successful candidate will spend 80% of their time working with our Trase team, focussing on supply chain transparency and sustainability. The rest of their time will be spent supporting the communications team to deliver great work across our programmatic and brand-building objectives.

You will support the creation and implementation of communications strategies and campaigns, write content and grow our audience by raising our profile. You will help manage our digital channels including websites, mailing lists and social media. You will also measure the success of our work to help us evaluate our performance and making recommendations for improvements.

Global Canopy is committed to creating systemic change, and we do this by targeting the market forces that destroy nature. The key audiences for communications delivered by this role are governments, companies, the finance sector and civil society. We are looking for someone who is passionate about addressing deforestation, biodiversity loss and the climate crisis with these audiences.

Support the delivery of communications strategies and campaigns, working with the Trase Communications Lead and subject matter experts.

Write communications materials including website and social media copy, newsletters and press releases, and proactively investigate relevant opportunities to showcase our work.

Upload content onto our websites and be responsible for our organisational mailing lists through Mailchimp.

Coordinate and manage digital channels including LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and digital advertising.

Track analytics to measure success and present opportunities for improvement.

Support the development and management of key communications resources for Trase and Global Canopy such as image banks, style guides and service provider lists (e.g. translators and interpreters).

Raise our profile by supporting our events strategy – working with staff across Global Canopy and the Trase partner organisations on a programme of external and public-facing events, including webinars.

Ensure content aligns with Trase’s brand identity and tone of voice, working alongside design and content specialists.

Be a team player, assisting work across the communications team as needed.

Trase is looking for a data scientist to help develop and maintain up-to-date data on supply chains and environmental impacts across Trase’s priority commodities (with a focus on soy, beef, palm oil, cocoa and wood pulp). You will play a key role in updating supply chain and impact data on these commodities, developing and maintaining reproducible workflows and quality assurance protocols, and innovating methods and data products to link impacts to production and trade. In addition, you will contribute to actionable insights from our data to drive impact with target audiences.

This role requires a strong data scientist with experience working with both spatial and non-spatial data, and an eagerness to learn about sustainability issues and methods. The ability to collaborate with colleagues across the team is key to success in this role.

The position is part of Trase’s product team, working alongside data engineers, back- and front-end web developers, a UX designer and other data scientists. You will be an active part of a global team of multinational, multidisciplinary and multilingual experts.

applying existing methods to update commodity supply chains and spatial metrics on the environmental impacts of commodity production and supporting the preparation of documentation (approx. 50%)

Data Scientist

The Data Product Owner is a new role for Trase’s open data offering, encompassing global trade, subnational supply chain maps, regional metrics on environmental and social impacts, as well as data on supply chain facilities and risk exposure. We are at a pivotal moment in Trase’s development, seeking to diversify our data offering and improve the delivery of our data products.

The primary purpose of this role is to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of Trase’s open data products, driving uptake and impact on the sustainability of commodity trade. You will work closely with Trase’s research and development (R&D) and impact teams, as well as partners, to ensure product development is informed by data and methods requirements while aligning with impact priorities.

As Data Product Owner, you will gather input from stakeholders inside and outside the team, maintain a clear vision for the data product portfolio and ensure its effective delivery. You will oversee product development decisions while playing an active, hands-on role in their delivery. Initially, this role combines product management with hands-on data science work, but as the team grows, we expect greater management responsibility.

The position will be part of Trase’s product team, working alongside data engineers, developers, a UX designer and data scientists. You will be part of a global team of leading, multinational, multidisciplinary experts.

Data product roadmap and portfolio management (50%)

Managing the data product roadmap of updates, improvements and new products. This includes monitoring progress, identifying delivery risks and working closely with internal teams including R&D and impact, to mitigate risks.

2. Data product strategy and user needs (20%)

Ensuring Trase’s data products align with user needs, critically appraising new innovations from R&D and partners. You will also co-own the product strategy with the Product Lead and other key team members, ensuring overall alignment of the data product roadmap with the product vision.

Supporting the development and maintenance of data products in collaboration with the product and R&D teams. This includes delivering technical quality assurance through product sign-off against acceptance criteria and user testing.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data product management and data science, with experience in sustainability within the agricultural, land-use or forestry sectors. The Stockholm Environment Institute calls for expressions of interest regarding the procurement of a Product Designer for the Trase Initiative.

Trase is an independent science-based initiative with the goal of empowering a just transition towards more sustainable systems of production, trade and consumption of commodities that are driving the majority of deforestation worldwide. ) in January 2024 and we are looking to make continuous improvements on the site and our individual data products for the rest of the year. This role fills an important gap in the product team which currently has a product manager, frontend developer and a backend data engineer - working alongside a wider data and innovation team. We are looking for somebody to lead the product design responsibilities in the team and be an advocate for our users, while helping to critically judge the success of our products against user-focused outcomes.

The main responsibility of this role is to lead on all product design work by discovering user insights, turning them into designs for testing and preparing implementable high-fidelity designs for development.

With recent work in reforming the product vision and strategy, Trase is moving towards having a more defined user experience. As part of this, we are providing users with varied but curated access to our data and intelligence. This change in approach resulted in a re-design of the user journey on trase.earth, which ultimately led to a new website. We are now using the new website as a foundation and improving user journeys we see are the most effective in delivering value to our users. You will work with Trase´s team to identify unmet needs and user pain points, and lead research on user experience, as well as ongoing concept and prototype testing work. User research work also includes engaging with Trase´s partners and internal team who both use and distribute Trase´s products. User feedback feeds directly into Trase’s monitoring, evaluation, and learning system to inform prioritization of impact pathways.

Implementing, testing and iterating ongoing UX/UI improvements

Linked to user research, once we identify and prioritise specific pages or user flows, we envision the product designer to own the process of turning insights into effective design, that can then be tested with users and iterated on.

We expect the product designer to collaborate with product managers, engineers, visual designers, and other stakeholders to effectively communicate design ideas. This may involve presentations, explaining design decisions, incorporating improvement suggestions, and advocating for user needs throughout product development.

As the first ever product designer, we expect this role to play an active role in setting up standard practices and ways of working, based on common approaches. We also expect the product designer to contribute to development of product strategy, ways of working and other resources as needed.
